Hello, I feel like I should have something crafty to show you, but there hasn't been much of that happening recently! The nicer weather got me in the mood for a bit of spring cleaning and moving things around a bit, and made pottering in the garden a pleasure again.
I've been trying to get some photos of the red kites that seem to have taken up residence nearby but never seem to have my camera handy. There have been some in the area for a few years but I've never noticed them over my garden before, but last week saw 5 of them circling round, quite low, a beautiful sight, and a distinctive call. I don't know if they are a threat to wood pigeons, but they seem to spook them into flying off in huge flocks. I imagine a dummy one would be good for keeping them away from the veg plot!
Anyway, there's some info about them Here and lots of pic's like this on Google
Here's my rubbish shots taken through the kitchen window.
Hopefully I'll get some better ones when I'm out in the garden more!

P.S. Sorry, but I've had to put word verification back on. The amount of spam getting through is driving me nuts. Do they really get anyone checking out their sites when the comments don't even make sense :(

How wonderful to have these magnificent birds flying overhead. I found it so difficult trying to capture the geese flying overhead- they were

ReplyDeleteRed Kites seems to be a really good breeding story of late...I didn't realise they had gotten quite so far south - half way down the A33 was the closest I saw. The main concentration always used to seem to be along the M40 corridor. See lots and lots out here now I've moved and they are a wonderful sight..I get a little nervous if the kittens and the chickens are out in the garden when they are circling though...they are beautiful but I don't want to provide their lunch :o)
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to worry about kittens & chickens, Kitty - Red Kites are not hunters, they are scavengers - taking 'road-kill' and things like that. Living not far from the M40, I see loads here. I have fed them in the back garden although they never land. Managed a couple of photos of them swooping to pick up bits of cold left-overs.
DeleteHi Debbie, lovely blog -I hope you don't mind me leaving a comment here?
Cheers.....Bernard from Bucks
Thanks Bernard, I guess they're after the food rather than the birds. Always nice to hear from new bloggers :)
DeleteBeautiful pics of a beautiful birds :)

Lovely birds and is is very very difficult to get photos of birds in flight.
ReplyDeleteBy the way I set my blog up so it doesn't accept anonymour comments which seemed to deal with the spam without me needing to reinstate word verification. It's now set to registered users only which means people use their OpenID sign in which is the same as your Blogger sign in or Google, Facebook, Yahoo!, Microsoft, AOL, MySpace, Sears, Universal Music Group, France Telecom, Novell, Sun, Telecom Italia, sign ins among other. I als set up posts over 5 days old to need moderation as so,e of these were hijacoked by spam.
Good idea Sue. I wasn't sure if registered users meant only Blogger ones which was no good for everyone else, but will try that. I did have moderation on for over 1 week, but got fed up dealing with all the e-mails!
DeleteHow lovely to have these birds around the area. I've tried also to capture birds in flight, all with no success. How do these professionals do it I wonder!
ReplyDeleteSuch wonderful birds, lucky you to have them near by :)
ReplyDeleteHave you tried closing your blog to anonymous comments and/or moderating comments more than a few days old ... that can usually pretty much solve the spam problem without the need for word verification.
Sorry, just notice I'm the second person to suggest that, and you're obviously trying it :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous birds! Your comment about the spam made my laugh out loud... I've been thinking about the same, do they really think you would visit their sites and even shop from them?? I get endless offers to buy some Luis Vuitton bags!!! :)
ReplyDeleteDon't think I've had that one, but all sorts of other random stuff. I've changed it to registered users only and that seems to have stopped it :)
DeleteI think that's the only way to stop it :)
DeleteBeautiful birds...so exciting to see them isn't it....you did well to capture those shots (I usually grab my camera a moment too late at those times!) Sorry you got spammed so much...me too!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend.
